You cleared JEE. That part is done.
But here is something a lot of students find out too late. Getting the rank is only half of it. What comes next is JoSAA Counselling and this is honestly where things can go very wrong very fast if you are not paying attention. If you are asking what Josaa counselling is, you need to read this guide carefully. Not because the process is hard. But because the deadlines are tight, the rules are strict and one small mistake can take away a seat that your rank actually deserved.
What is JoSAA Counselling and Its Role in IIT/NIT Admissions
JoSAA conducts admissions for IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIEST Shibpur and several other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) through a single online platform. That includes 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, IIEST Shibpur and 40 other GFTIs.
If you have a JEE Advanced 2026 rank you are eligible for IIT seats. If you have a JEE Main 2026 rank you are eligible for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Both groups go through the same portal which is josaa.nic.in. There is no separate process for IIT students and NIT students. One portal, one login, one place to do everything.
Seats are given out over 6 rounds using a computer-based system. Your rank, your category, the choices you fill and the order you fill them in all go into that system. The output is your allotted seat.
JoSAA Counselling Dates and When Will JoSAA Counselling Start
Based on previous years, JoSAA 2026 counselling is expected to begin in early June 2026, shortly after the JEE Advanced results. That is one day after JEE Advanced results come out. The whole process then runs through late July 2026. Based on what happened in 2025 here is the rough breakdown.

These are expected dates based on past years. Do not fully depend on third party websites for final dates.
The Full Process Step by Step
There are 6 steps. Every one of them has a deadline. Missing or skipping even one can kick you out of the process completely. That is not an exaggeration. That is exactly what the JoSAA rules say.
Step 1: Register on josaa.nic.in
Use your JEE Main or JEE Advanced roll number to register. Registration and choice filling open together on June 2. Do not wait a few days to get started. The window is about 10 days and you want all of that time to think through your choices properly.
Step 2: Fill Your Choices
This is honestly the most important part of the whole thing. You list every college and branch you want in order of preference. No limit on how many you can add. The system goes down your list and gives you the best seat it can find based on your rank.
Fill at least 30 to 50 choices. Students who add only 5 or 8 options thinking they know exactly where they will land often end up with nothing because cutoffs shifted slightly. Add ambitious ones, realistic ones and safe ones. Mix them up.
Also use both mock allotment rounds before you lock your final choices. These are practice runs that show you where your rank actually lands across your list. A lot of students skip the mock rounds and then regret it after real allotment.
Step 3: Wait for Seat Allotment
After choice filling closes the system runs the allotment and publishes results. This happens 6 times across 6 rounds. Each round you either get a better seat or keep the one you had. You never get pushed down to a worse seat than you already confirmed.
Step 4: Choose Freeze, Float or Slide
Once you get a seat you pick one of 3 options. A lot of students get confused here so read this carefully.
Freeze: You are happy with this seat. You accept it and opt out of all further rounds. No more changes possible after this.
Float: You accept this seat but also want to try for something higher on your list in the next round. If a better college or branch at a different college opens up for your rank, you move there automatically.
Slide: You accept this college but want to try for a better branch within the same college. Not a different college. Same college, better branch only.
One thing many students miss: Float and Slide are not available in the last round. In Round 6 your only choices are Freeze or Withdraw. Keep that in mind when you are deciding.
Step 5: Pay the Seat Acceptance Fee
Right after choosing Freeze, Float or Slide you pay the seat acceptance fee online. For General, OBC and EWS candidates it is Rs 35,000. For SC, ST and PwD candidates it is Rs 15,000. This gets adjusted against your final college fees when you join. If you withdraw before the last round Rs 3,000 is cut as processing charge and the rest comes back to you.
Step 6: Upload Documents and Complete Online Verification
After fee payment you upload all your documents through the JoSAA virtual reporting centre. A verification officer goes through them. If they raise a query you have to respond before the deadline they give. If you do not respond the seat gets cancelled. And here is the part that trips people up: JoSAA does not always send a separate SMS or email for this. You have to check your portal login every single day during this period.
Documents to Keep Ready Before Counselling Starts
Get all of these together now. Scrambling for them after you get a seat wastes time you do not have.
1. Class 10 mark sheet or birth certificate
2. Class 12 mark sheet and passing certificate
3. JEE Main 2026 admit card and scorecard
4. JEE Advanced 2026 admit card and scorecard (only for IIT applicants)
5. Recent passport size photographs
6. Category certificate for SC, ST, OBC-NCL or EWS if it applies to you
7. PwD certificate if applicable
8. Bank passbook copy or account details
9. Aadhaar card or any valid photo ID
Warnings: The Mistakes That Actually Cost Students Their Seat
This part is not here to scare you. It is here because these are real things that happen to real students every year and most of them are completely avoidable.
Warning 1: OBC-NCL and EWS Certificates
OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be valid for JoSAA 2026 as per the format and date requirements mentioned in the official JoSAA Business Rules. In many previous years, certificates issued after April 1 of the counselling year were required. Candidates should verify this carefully before counselling begins.
This is the single most common reason students lose their reserved category seat. If your certificate is dated before April 1, 2026 it will be rejected during document verification. JoSAA will shift you to the General category. If your seat was under OBC or EWS quota, that seat is gone. Go check the date on your certificate right now. If it is old, get a fresh one before counselling opens.
Warning 2: All 3 Steps in a Round Must Be Done Together
After getting a seat allotment you have to do 3 things in the same window: choose your option (Freeze, Float or Slide), upload documents and pay the seat acceptance fee. Doing only 2 out of 3 counts as incomplete. Your seat gets cancelled and you are out of further rounds too. This is the official JoSAA rule. Do all 3 before the deadline, not just one or two.
Warning 3: Float and Slide Are Very Different Things
If you want a better branch at the same college, use Slide. If you accidentally choose Float you might end up at a completely different institute that was ranked higher in your list, maybe one you added months ago and forgot about. Read what each option does before clicking. This one mistake has moved students to colleges they did not want.
Warning 4: JoSAA Will Not Always Notify You
There is no guarantee of SMS or email alerts during the counselling process. Seat allotment results, document queries, deadline reminders, all of it shows up on the portal only. Students who check once every few days miss things. Check your josaa.nic.in login every single day while counselling is running. Every day. Without fail.
Warning 5: Too Few Choices Is a Gamble You Should Not Take
Some students fill only 5 or 6 choices thinking they already know exactly what they will get. Cutoffs shift every year. A college that was in your range last year can go up or down. Fill at least 30 to 50 choices mixing reaches, realistic options and safe picks. The more you fill the more the system has to work with for you.
Warning 6: Reporting to the College Physically Is Still Mandatory
Finishing everything online does not mean you are done. After all rounds close you still have to go to your allotted institute in person for final document verification and to pay the remaining fees. For IITs this happens at the IIT itself. Physical reporting timelines differ across institutes and admission systems. Students must follow the reporting instructions issued by their allotted institute. Missing this physical reporting means the seat gets cancelled even after you completed everything online.
What Happens After JoSAA: CSAB Special Rounds
Once all 6 JoSAA rounds are done, any seats still empty in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs go to CSAB. The Central Seat Allocation Board runs 2 more rounds in July and August 2026. IITs do not take part in CSAB.
