If you appeared for IAT 2026 and are hoping to join IIT Madras, the single most important thing to understand is that IIT Madras does not allot its BS seats through iiseradmission.in, the portal used for IISER counselling. IIT Madras runs its own, separate admission process on its own portal, and it has its own separate fee structure, timeline, and rules. The IAT rank is a shared entry ticket, not a shared counselling system.
IISER counselling (iiseradmission.in): Covers the seven IISERs. Uses Freeze/Float, a Seat Acceptance Fee of ₹35,000 (general categories) or ₹17,500 (SC/ST), and runs in rounds through September.
IIT Madras BS admission (ugadmissions.iitm.ac.in/bsiat): Covers only IIT Madras’s BS (Medical Sciences & Engineering) and BS (Chemistry) programmes. Candidates must register separately on this IIT Madras portal after qualifying IAT 2026. Fees, rounds, and rules are entirely different from IISER’s, as detailed below.
IISc Bangalore’s BS (Research) programme is also a separate, standalone application on iisc.ac.in — not covered in this article.
Where the IAT 2026 → IIT Madras Process Currently Stands
IAT 2026 was conducted on June 7, 2026. IIT Madras opened its own BS application window on April 6, 2026, and closed it on June 5, 2026. According to IIT Madras’s official Seat Allotment Brochure 2026, the institute’s admission process was scheduled to run four rounds of offers, with document verification and admission at IIT Madras on July 23, 2026, joining on July 25, 2026, and classes commencing on July 30, 2026.
As of early August 2026, this timeline means the regular 2026 admission cycle for IIT Madras’s BS (Medical Sciences & Engineering) and BS (Chemistry) programmes has run its course. If you already have an offer, the information below on fees, documents, and withdrawal still applies to you. If you’re researching this for a future cycle, or checking whether a spot round is open, log in to ugadmissions.iitm.ac.in/bsiat directly — spot admission against any seats that remain vacant is sometimes conducted close to the start of classes, and only the portal will confirm if this is happening.
How to Apply and Check Your Status on the IIT Madras Portal
Unlike IISER counselling, qualifying IAT 2026 does not automatically enter you into IIT Madras’s process. You must separately register on IIT Madras’s own portal.
• Go to ugadmissions.iitm.ac.in/bsiat — this is the only official portal for this admission.
• Register and pay the non-refundable application fee: ₹1,000 for General, GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL candidates; ₹500 for SC, ST, PwD, Third Gender, and Female candidates.
• Once offers are announced, log in to the same portal to check whether you’ve received one, and to complete “Online Reporting” — accept or reject the seat, upload documents, and pay the Seat Acceptance Fee, all within that round’s deadline.
• There is no separate PDF “allotment list” published the way IISER publishes one; your status is visible only against your own login.
Seat Acceptance Fee — Correct, Category-Wise Figures
These figures are specific to IIT Madras’s own BS admission and are different from the IISER Seat Acceptance Fee.

The SAF must be paid only once, in the round you first receive an offer. Non-payment within the round deadline is treated as a rejection of the offer, and you drop out of all further rounds — there is no appeal.
Accepting or Rejecting an Offer
IIT Madras’s official brochure describes each round as a straightforward accept-or-reject decision: log in, and either accept the offered seat (pay the SAF, upload documents) or reject it. This is simpler than IISER’s Freeze/Float system, and the two should not be assumed to work the same way — do not carry over IISER counselling logic when dealing with the IIT Madras portal. If you take no action by the round deadline, it is treated as a rejection and you are removed from the process.
What Is the Withdrawal Policy?
IIT Madras sets two key withdrawal dates each cycle — a Round-wise Withdrawal (RW) date and a Final Withdrawal (FW) date, both announced on the admission portal itself.
• Withdraw before the RW deadline, having not yet accepted any seat: no charge at all.
• Withdraw on or before the FW deadline, from an accepted seat: a flat, non-refundable processing charge of ₹7,000 is deducted from your SAF; the balance is refunded.
• No withdrawal request is entertained after the FW deadline under any circumstances.
• Withdrawal is valid only through the “Withdraw” button on the IIT Madras admission portal. Email or phone requests are not accepted.
Refunds are processed only after three weeks from the completion of the final round of the admission process, and you do not need to take any additional steps once a withdrawal request is approved.
Which Documents Are Required for IAT 2026?
Based on IIT Madras’s official document checklist for this admission, keep the following ready to upload:
• Class X mark sheet or birth certificate (proof of date of birth)
• Class XII mark sheet for the qualifying examination
• IAT 2026 scorecard
• Category certificate (OBC-NCL, GEN-EWS, SC, or ST), in the format specified on the portal, if applicable
• Medical certificate, in the format specified in the brochure
• PwD certificate, in the prescribed format, if applicable
• A cancelled cheque or a passbook image showing your bank account details, for refunds
OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS certificates must be dated on or after April 1, 2026, or otherwise remain valid through the reporting period, or they will be rejected at verification — get a fresh certificate well before you apply if yours is older.
Who Is Eligible for IAT 2026 Admission?
• Must have qualified IAT 2026.
• Must be an Indian national, or an OCI/PIO cardholder with the card issued before March 4, 2021.
• Class XII (or equivalent), science stream, passed in 2024, 2025 or 2026 from a COBSE-recognised board.
• For BS (Medical Sciences & Engineering): Mathematics plus at least two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics in Class XII.
• For BS (Chemistry): Chemistry plus at least two of Biology, Mathematics, Physics in Class XII.
• Minimum aggregate in Class XII: 60% for General/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates, 55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
What Does the Seat Matrix 2026 Reveal?
A total of 86 seats are on offer across the two programmes: 36 in BS (Medical Sciences & Engineering) and 50 in BS (Chemistry), distributed across categories as below (gender-neutral and female-only sub-quotas combined per category).

What Mistakes Can Cost You Your Seat?
• Applying only on iiseradmission.in and assuming it covers IIT Madras — it doesn’t. You must separately register on ugadmissions.iitm.ac.in/bsiat.
• Missing the round deadline for paying the Seat Acceptance Fee — this is treated as a rejection and cannot be appealed or extended.
• Taking no action after an offer appears — silence is treated as rejection, exactly as with non-payment.
• Submitting an OBC-NCL or GEN-EWS certificate dated before April 1, 2026.
• Trying to withdraw by email or phone instead of the “Withdraw” button on the portal — only the portal submission counts.
• Assuming IIT Madras offers an upgrade/float mechanism identical to IISER’s — the two systems are run independently, and IIT Madras’s brochure describes a simple accept-or-reject choice each round.
