Results are out. The hard part is done, or so you thought.
Now you’re staring at josaa.nic.in, tabs open everywhere, WhatsApp groups sending contradictory advice every 20 minutes, and somehow you feel more lost than you did before the exam. That’s JoSAA counselling for you. Nobody really warns you about this phase.
The good news? It’s not actually complicated once someone explains it plainly. So here’s a no-fluff breakdown of the best IITs and NITs across Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai with real cutoff numbers and the stuff you actually need to know before you fill your choice list.
Wait How Does JoSAA Even Work?
Before we get to the colleges, you need to understand one thing that most students get confused about.
JoSAA runs up to six rounds of seat allotment. Each round, candidates get offers, accept or reject them, and seats shuffle around. The cutoff everyone talks about the one that actually matters is the Round 6 closing rank. Round 1 numbers look scarier than they are. Don’t use them to rule colleges out.
Now, the big split:
If you’re going for an IIT, your JEE Advanced AIR is everything. No Home State quota, no state-based relaxation, everyone competes on the same list regardless of where they’re from.
If you’re targeting an NIT, your JEE Main CRL matters, but so does your state. Half the seats in every NIT go to students from that state (Home State quota). This is why you’ll see wildly different cutoffs for the same branch at the same college. NIT Trichy CSE closing at 1,449 for Other State students and 4,569 for Home State students isn’t a typo; they’re literally different seat pools.
IIT Delhi Yes, It Lives Up to the Hype
There’s a reason IIT Delhi toppers end up everywhere consulting firms, startups, research labs, government policy roles. The campus is in Hauz Khas, which is basically the center of everything in Delhi. DRDO and CSIR are minutes away. The startup culture here is as strong as anywhere in the country.
Here’s what the JoSAA 2025 cutoffs looked like for General category students:
| Branch | Opening Rank | Closing Rank |
| Computer Science & Engineering | 16 | 116 |
| Electrical Engineering | 382 | 622 |
| Chemical Engineering | 1,689 | 2,207 |
| Civil Engineering | 2,428 | 4,108 |
| Textile Technology | 4,999 | 5,608 |
CSE closing at 116 that’s a tight number. If your JEE Advanced rank is, say, 400 or 800, CSE at IIT Delhi isn’t the move. But Electrical Engineering closing at 622 is a completely different story, and honestly a fantastic branch with strong placements. Chemical Engineering at 2,207 is reachable for a much wider range of students than people assume.
One thing worth noting: IIT Delhi CSE has been creeping slightly tighter year over year, so don’t bank on a surprise relaxation in 2026.
IIT Bombay – The Most Wanted Seat in the Country
Let’s just say it plainly. CSE at IIT Bombay is the single most competitive undergraduate seat in India. In 2025, out of the top 100 JEE Advanced rankers, 72 picked IIT Bombay. That tells you everything.
The closing rank for CSE in 2025 was 66. Sixty-six. It moved from 68 in 2024, so essentially unchanged, which tells you how rock-solid the demand is at the very top.
| Branch | Closing Rank (2025) |
| Computer Science & Engineering | 66 |
| Electrical Engineering | ~300–500 |
| Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science | 4,345 |
Here’s a number people overlook, though 4,345 is the closing rank for Metallurgical Engineering. So if your JEE Advanced rank is somewhere in the 3,000–4,500 range and you want the IIT Bombay campus experience, you can still get there. Not through CSE, obviously, but the campus, the network, the culture that’s not branch-specific.
Mumbai as a city adds something IIT Bombay students quietly benefit from: proximity to finance, consulting, and the media industry in ways that campus in a smaller city simply can’t replicate.
IIT Madras Possibly the Most Underrated of the Three
People sleep on IIT Madras. Consistently ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in NIRF every single year, the campus in Chennai is one of the most beautiful in Asia forest cover, deer walking around between hostels, the whole thing. It sounds like a distraction but it genuinely shapes the culture there.
Chennai’s tech scene has exploded Zoho, Freshworks, and a growing semiconductor corridor mean IIT Madras students aren’t just getting recruited, they’re often building companies near home.
| Branch | Closing Rank (2025) |
| Computer Science & Engineering | 171 |
| Electrical Engineering | ~600–800 (approx.) |
| Mechanical Engineering | ~1,800–2,500 (approx.) |
CSE at 171 that’s slightly more breathing room than Delhi (116) and Bombay (66), but you’re still in top-200 territory for JEE Advanced. For students in the 500 –2,000 rank range, IIT Madras’s Electrical Engineering or core branches are absolutely worth targeting seriously.
NITs Don’t Write Them Off
Not everyone sits JEE Advanced, and even among those who do, an NIT can be a genuinely better call than a newer IIT depending on your branch and rank. The best NITs in India hold their own against many IITs people who say otherwise are usually going off outdated impressions.
NIT Trichy The NIT Everyone’s Heard Of, For Good Reason
The NIT Trichy ranking story is simple: NIRF 2025 placed it at rank 9 nationally among engineering colleges. That’s not 9th among NITs, that’s 9th in the entire country, ahead of most IITs that were set up after 2010.
CSE here is where the competition gets real. JoSAA 2025, Round 6:
- Other State, General: Closing rank ~1,449
- Home State (Tamil Nadu), General: Closing rank ~4,569
To get the OS CSE seat, you’re looking at 99.5 to 99.7 percentile in JEE Main. That’s not casual. The average CSE package was 27.1 LPA in recent placements, and the highest domestic offer was 64 LPA. Those are IIT-comparable numbers.
It’s in Tiruchirappalli, about 60 km from Chennai. Not a metro, but students consistently say the campus life and academics more than make up for it.
NIT Delhi Smaller, Newer, But In the Right City
NIT Delhi doesn’t carry the legacy of Trichy or Surathkal. It’s newer, the alumni network is still building. But the location genuinely gives it an edge being in Delhi means industry access, internship opportunities, and company visits that older NITs in smaller cities have to work much harder to arrange.
NIT Delhi CSE generally attracts strong competition and often requires a high JEE Main rank.
NIT Surathkal The South’s Other Powerhouse
NIRF 2025 ranked NIT Karnataka, Surathkal second among all NITs. It sits near Mangalore with a strong CSE and ECE reputation and placement numbers that are hard to argue with.
CSE (Other State, General) closed around 2,500 in JoSAA 2025. If you’re building a South India-focused choice list and CSE is the target, a Trichy + Surathkal combo near the top makes a lot of sense.
A Few Things That’ll Actually Help During Counselling
Round 6 is the number to use. Not Round 1, not Round 3. The final allotment data is what tells you the real demand for a seat.
Add a buffer of 5–10%. Cutoffs shift exam difficulty, number of applicants, seat additions all nudge them around year to year. If you’re right on the edge, you’re gambling. Give yourself room.
Your home state matters at NITs. If you’re from Tamil Nadu applying to NIT Trichy, or from Karnataka applying to Surathkal you have a real structural advantage. Use it.
CSE isn’t the only good branch anymore. Mathematics & Computing, AI & Data Science, ECE these programs now place students comparably to CSE at many top engineering colleges. Don’t skip them just because they don’t say “Computer Science” at the top.
josaa.nic.in has everything. Opening and closing ranks, every institute, every branch, every category, every round. It’s all there for free. Use the official data rather than third-party summaries wherever possible.
City-Wise Snapshot
| City | Best IIT | Strong NIT Option |
| Delhi | IIT Delhi | NIT Delhi |
| Mumbai | IIT Bombay | VNIT Nagpur (nearest Tier 1) |
| Chennai | IIT Madras | NIT Trichy (~330 km away) |
JoSAA feels high-stakes because it is. But it’s also just a process rank, preferences, category, state, and how carefully you’ve thought through your list. The students who do best in counselling aren’t necessarily the ones with the best ranks. They’re the ones who built a realistic, well-researched choice list and didn’t panic when Round 1 didn’t go their way.
You’ve made it this far. The rest is just paperwork.
