The countdown has officially begun for one of India’s most competitive entrance examinations. JEE Advanced 2026 will take place on May 17, 2026 which falls on a Sunday and IIT Roorkee will serve as the organising institute for this examination. But beyond the routine annual shift in organisers, there’s something potentially groundbreaking brewing — whispers of a JEE Advanced new exam pattern that could fundamentally reshape how the brightest engineering aspirants are evaluated across the country.
IIT Kanpur has developed a new set of aptitude-based assessment questions which evaluate students through analytical reasoning and conceptual understanding instead of their traditional formula-based test preparation. The IIT Council and Joint Admission Board have already started discussing this proposal which shows that potential changes to the system currently stand under institutional review but remain unapproved.
The IIT Kanpur JEE Advanced Test Model: What’s Being Proposed?
The IIT Kanpur JEE Advanced test model is being developed as a pilot initiative, subject to approval from IIT Roorkee. The new assessment format will determine student skills through critical thinking and logical reasoning and their ability to solve problems in new situations. The pilot program will establish background work for future IIT admission process changes if it receives permission to operate.

Who Can Sit for JEE Advanced 2026?
The eligibility requirements contain multiple levels.
- The first requirement for candidates requires them to achieve a top 2.5 lakh position in JEE Main 2026 B.E./B.Tech paper.
- The candidates need to have born on or after October 1, 2001, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
- And they must take Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026.
- The applicants must not have accepted any previous IIT admission offers and they can take two tests in consecutive years.
What Happens After Clearing the Exam?
The JEE Advanced exam allows students to access various programs B.Tech and B.S. and B.Arch and dual degree and integrated master’s degree programs which all universities in India offer through their IIT and IISc Bengaluru branches. However, qualifying alone isn’t enough. Candidates must also secure either a minimum of 75% in their Class 12 board exams (65% for SC, ST, and PwD candidates) or place within the top 20th percentile of their respective board. Final seat allocation takes place via the JoSAA counselling process.
Registration Fees
The exam facilities in India charge female candidates and SC/ST/PwD applicants a fee of ₹1,600 while all other candidates must pay ₹3,200. The testing centers in SAARC countries charge international candidates a fee of USD 100 while international candidates from non-SAARC countries must pay USD 200.
What Stays the Same
The JEE Advanced exam maintains its original two-paper system which includes mandatory tests through computer-based testing and JoSAA seat assignment process together with three subject tests.
The new aptitude-based evaluation system requires final confirmation but JEE applicants should observe 2026 because it serves as an essential assessment period. The exam requires students to start early since they need to think deeply because the upcoming exam will evaluate more than their ability to memorize information.
