JoSAA is over. Six rounds done. And a bunch of seats in NITs and IIITs are still just sitting there unclaimed.
That is what CSAB is for.
Most students know JoSAA. But once it ends a lot of people go quiet, thinking that is it, the process is over. It is not. CSAB counselling starts right after and honestly for many students this is the round that actually gets them the seat they wanted. Missed JoSAA entirely? Fine. Got a seat but want something better? Also fine. Withdraw? Still eligible. CSAB 2026 is open to pretty much anyone with a valid JEE Main rank.
What Even Is CSAB
CSAB is the Central Seat Allocation Board. Simple job: take whatever seats JoSAA left empty and fill them.
Every year after all 6 JoSAA rounds wrap up, a decent number of seats in NITs, IIITs, SPAs and GFTIs are still vacant. Students who got seats did not show up. Some backed out at the last step. Some branches just never got enough takers. Those seats go to CSAB. The portal is csab.nic.in and IITs have nothing to do with this. CSAB is purely for the NIT plus system.
CSAB 2026 Expected Dates
CSAB 2026 kicks off in late July right after JoSAA finishes and runs into August. Here is the rough picture.
Registration Opens: Late July 2026 (tentative)
Choice Filling: Late July 2026
Special Round 1 Allotment: Late July to Early August 2026
Special Round 2 Allotment: August 2026
NEUT and Supernumerary Rounds: August 2026
Everything Wraps Up: Late August 2026
All of this is tentative. Once JoSAA closes go straight to csab.nic.in and check. Do not take dates from random websites and assume they are final.
CSAB Eligibility Criteria 2026: It Is Not the Same for Everyone
This is the part people read too fast and then get confused about. CSAB has 3 separate rounds and who gets to enter each one is different.
CSAB Special Round: This is the main one. Anyone with a valid JEE Main 2026 rank can enter. Did JoSAA and got a seat? You can still come here. Withdrew your JoSAA seat? Also fine. Never did JoSAA at all? Still eligible. The only thing you need is a JEE Main 2026 rank.
CSAB NEUT Round: NEUT also includes specific institutes + region-based seats.
CSAB Supernumerary Round: This one creates seats on top of the normal seat count in certain NITs. Only for students from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
CSAB Registration Process 2026: What You Actually Have to Do
Big thing to know before anything else. Your JoSAA registration is useless here. Even if you did every single step of JoSAA correctly, CSAB does not carry any of it over. Fresh registration on csab.nic.in. From zero. Every time.
Step 1: Go to csab.nic.in and log in with your JEE Main 2026 application number and password. Do the OTP thing and submit. That is registration done.
Step 2: Pay the Special Round enrolment fee through net banking, debit card, credit card or SBI e-challan. A part of this amount is a non-refundable processing fee, while the remaining amount is adjusted against admission fees or refunded according to CSAB rules.
Step 3: Fill completely fresh choices. Everything you picked during JoSAA is cancelled. Previous JoSAA choices do not carry forward to CSAB. You must create a fresh preference list. Every NIT plus program you are eligible for shows up in your list. Fill as many choices as possible (no official minimum), to increase your chances.
Step 4: Seat allotment happens over 2 special rounds. After each one you get a small window to respond. Miss it and you are gone from the process.
Step 5: Pay seat acceptance fee. CSAB requires a separate non-refundable registration/participation fee as per official notification.
Step 6: Upload documents and wait for verification. Log into your portal every single day. If there is a query and you miss the reply window your seat is gone.
Step 7: Go to the college in person. Original documents, remaining fees paid there. This step is not a formality. Skip it and the seat gets cancelled and the money does not come back.
Documents to Keep Ready
Get all of these scanned and on your phone before CSAB opens. You will thank yourself later.
1. JEE Main 2026 scorecard and admit card
2. Class 10 certificate for date of birth
3. Class 12 mark sheet and passing certificate
4. Category certificate for SC, ST, OBC-NCL or EWS (Ensure your OBC-NCL or EWS certificate is valid for the financial year specified in the official CSAB 2026 information brochure. Using an outdated certificate can result in category rejection and conversion to the General category.)
5. PwD certificate if it applies
6. JoSAA seat allotment letter if you took part in JoSAA
7. JoSAA fee receipt if you paid there
8. Aadhaar, PAN or Passport as photo ID
9. A few passport size photos
How the CSAB Seat Allotment Process Works
CSAB uses your JEE Main Common Rank List. Category reservations work the same way as JoSAA. SC, ST, OBC-NCL and EWS seats are still reserved. The system scans your choice list from the top and lands you at the best available seat your rank can get.
After Round 1 allotment there is something called a willingness step. If you got a seat and want to keep trying for something higher up your list in Round 2, you say yes. If you are done and happy with what you have, you Freeze. A lot of students ignore this step completely and miss the upgrade. Do not do that.
One more thing worth knowing. The seats in CSAB come from whatever JoSAA did not fill. But that does not mean they are all bad options. Last minute withdrawals happen more than you think and some decent NIT branches open up right at this stage. Check the seat matrix before you lock your choices. You might be surprised.
Warnings: Things That Will Actually Destroy Your Chances
CSAB moves faster than JoSAA. The windows are tighter. The consequences of messing up are harder. Every year students lose seats here not because their rank was bad but because they slipped up on process. Here is exactly what to watch out for.
Warning 1: Your JoSAA Choices Are Dead. Fill Everything Fresh.
CSAB officially says previously filled JoSAA choices are null and void. If you register, pay the fee and then assume your old choices will carry over, you will get nothing. The system has no list to work with. Failure to submit fresh choices can leave you ineligible for allotment despite completing registration. Open the choice filling window the moment it starts.
Warning 2: Missing a response deadline can lead to seat cancellation and significant fee deductions. Always check the official refund policy before participating.
In Special Round 2 if you do not respond after getting a seat, the seat is cancelled and the full acceptance fee is gone. Not partially. All of it. No appeal. This is where CSAB is stricter than JoSAA. Set multiple alarms. Put a note somewhere physical. Tell your parents. Do not miss it.
Warning 3: OBC-NCL and EWS Certificate Must Be Fresh, Dated After April 1, 2026
If your certificate is older than that it gets rejected. You get moved to General. Your reserved seat disappears. Go check the date on yours right now before you even think about opening the portal.
Warning 4: No Agents. No Third Party Help. Do It Yourself Only.
CSAB warns about this every single year and students still fall for it. The full registration is free on csab.nic.in. Anyone who asks for money to get you a seat through CSAB is either lying to you or doing something that could get your registration flagged and cancelled.
Warning 5: Online Is Not the Finish Line. You Still Have to Show Up.
After doing everything online a lot of students think they are sorted. They are not. You have to physically walk into the allotted college with original documents and pay the balance fees there. If you do not show up the seat is gone and none of the money comes back. Book your travel the same day allotment comes out.
